The votes are in for Your Voice, Your Choice: Parks and Streets
Nearly 8000 participated; 33 community projects selected

Here is what came out of our District 5 –

  • Lake City: Crossing Improvements on 35th Ave NE & NE 130th St (Cost: $75,000, Total Votes: 686)
  • Meadowbrook: Traffic Calming along Ravenna Ave NE near NE 98th St (Cost: $88,200, Total Votes: 633)
  • Pinehurst: Crossing Improvements near Hazel Wolf School (Cost: $90,000, Total Votes: 630)
  • Broadview: Walkway Improvements near Broadview-Thomson K-8 (Cost: $90,000, Total Votes: 584)

SEATTLE (August 16, 2017) – The results are in! Nearly 8000 community members voted for their favorite park and street projects in their Council Districts, and the top 33 projects were selected. It’s all part of the City’s Your Voice, Your Choice: Parks & Streets, the second year of our participatory budgeting initiative in which community members democratically decide how to spend a portion of the City’s budget. With a total of $2 million available for small-scale parks and streets projects, a maximum of $285,000 was allocated for each City Council District. The ideas came from the community and the projects were voted on in June.

“Now in its second year, we see how much interest there is in participatory budgeting,” said Kathy Nyland, director of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. “The numbers tell us people want to be involved and thousands participated, suggesting projects and voting on them. Everyone has a voice. It’s our job to listen, and the success shows that people have been heard!”

The projects were selected from nearly 900 ideas submitted in February by community members across Seattle. In each Council District, these ideas were evaluated and honed by community volunteers who participated on Project Development Teams. This spring, Seattle Department of Transportation and Seattle Parks and Recreation provided cost estimates for the project proposals. Then in June, 7,737 community members ages 11 and above voted by Council Districts, either online or at in-person polling stations, for their favorite projects.

The funding for Your Voice, Your Choice will be included as part of the Mayor’s 2018 Proposed Budget and the work with be implemented in 2018. You may note that some districts received more than the $285,000 allotted. Once the top projects in the seven Districts were selected by voters, there was more than $233,000 remaining in the budget. These dollars were used to fund one additional project in Districts 1, 2, and 5 which had the highest voter participation. You will also see that the number of funded projects varies by district. This is because the fund allotment is based on overall cost.

Many communities embraced the voting process, including District 5 where nearly 2,000 community members voted. “North Seattleites are passionate about making our streets safer and people liked being able to study each project and cast three votes,” said Janine Blaeloch, District 5 resident and Vote Champion. “Paper ballots in many languages were a huge hit at the Lake City Farmer’s Market and the library.”

Your Voice, Your Choice is part of Participatory Budgeting, a civic engagement program in which community members decide how to spend a portion of a City’s budget. Seattle has joined Chicago, New York, Boston, and cities across the globe in using the process. Your Voice, Your Choice is managed by Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.

As a bonus, while Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) reviewed ideas submitted by Your Voice, Your Choice participants, it ran the projects through its program priorities and was able to fund additional traffic calming and pedestrian improvement projects in underserved neighborhoods throughout the City. SDOT will work with communities to announce, design, and implement these projects in the upcoming year.
