Youth Leaders Unveil LC Mural
Community gathered on Wednesday to celebrate the dedication of the Mural Project created by Lake City youth as part of the Parks and Recreation’s youth leadership program organized by Lake City’s Mark Mendez. In partnership with local artist Andrew Miller, who donated his time to the process, the group created a wonderful expression of their experience in Lake City. With the tag line “We Are Lake City” the youth demonstrated that they are both leaders now and leaders for our future by bringing their voice and perspective to this community in such a thoughtful and creative way.
Brent Norton and Elliott Bay Brewery continue to show their commitment to Lake City by offering up their North Wall for the project. After the dedication the youth were treated to a meal at Elliott Bay to celebrate the day. Mark’s programming and the youth involved have already made a huge impact on Lake City from the STEP programs “Vacation In Lake City” film advocating for a new Community Center and more recreational opportunities to this expression that is hopefully and very likely the beginning of many more murals to come.
Lake City Future First has been very lucky to partner with the youth on weekly clean up efforts with our Clean and Safe Committee as well as providing them with two training’s on social media reporting and blog posting with the help of Seattle Globalist. We also were able to sponsor five lunches at local restaurants that are participating in our “World of Tastes in the Heart of Lake City” passport program to interview the owners and find out what it is like to own a small business here in our Lake City Community. Stay tuned to our business profile section to read their interviews.
These youth are truly an inspiration. We should all be on the look out for how we can partner with them in their journey that will teach us and build a stronger Lake City community.
