Coding Class for Lake City Young Leaders

This summer Build Lake City Together, the Versatile Company and the Lake City Young Leaders partnered to bring Creative Coding to Lake City Youth.

By Mark Mendez, Lake City Young Leaders Program Organizer:

Lake City Young Leaders (LCYL) program had the opportunity to participate in a coding class taught by Creative Coding. LCYL is a community-based leadership and career training program that empowers historically marginalized youth in the underserved community of Lake City, with strong 21st century soft skills and connects youth to future career opportunities. Creative Coding used the MIT Lab program, Scratch, to teach the teens the basics of coding. The teens were eventually able to make their own simple video games! Here is the link to their games, try them out! click here to visit games
Thank you to the Versatile Company and the Build Lake City Together project for sponsoring the Creative Coding class for the Lake City teens and helping them learn STEM skills that will prepare them for future careers.

Creative Coding is a mission-driven company that teaches kids from 8 to 18 how to code, by helping them write their own custom games, animations, and mobile apps. Founded 6 years ago by local dad Eric Fredrickson, who was looking in vain for high-quality coding classes for his daughter, we grew rapidly, and now serve 38 public and private schools in the Seattle area with after-school coding classes. We also support the community with self-funded scholarships, auction donations, and charity events at cost. Creative Coding’s teaching staff is dedicated to being the best in the world at teaching coding to kids. The company’s social mission is to encourage historically underrepresented groups, especially women and minorities, to learn coding at a young age. In this way, we’re changing the world, starting here in Seattle, one child at a time. To learn more or collaborate to support our mission, please visit their website at creativecoding.com.
The Versatile Company teaches people how to manage projects. They help their clients to select the best projects and deliver them faster, with better results. Versatile has been headquartered in Lake City for 20 years, while they serve their clients across the U.S. and around the world. The Versatile Company was inspired by the Lake City Mural project and created their own mural (see below), created by the son of the owner of the company, Jack Verzuh.
